ZOO SERIES
In traveling the U.S. and beyond, I’ve been drawn to paint zoo habitats. I’m intrigued by what metaphorical associations they can convey for our world at this time. One such meaning is derived from the map of the zoo being a kind of map of the planet, with boundaries, categorizations, routes, changes in scenery, etc… Another such association focuses on displacement, a consequence of a globalized economy. The titles of the works, borrowing from the name of the zoos depicted, reinforce this idea by highlighting the meaninglessness of place. That said, it is my hope that they also recall the beauty of the larger natural world we inhabit.
